Recruiting seems to become a bigger and bigger spectacle every National Signing Day as high school kids make commitments and analysts pour over recruiting classes. However, one aspect of recruiting that doesn’t get as much press and often gets overlooked are the JUCO transfers.

The SEC has seen some of it’s best players come from junior colleges – Cam Newton, Nick Fairley and Reggie Nelson, just to name a few.

Who are the impact JUCO players that could big names in the SEC this season? We break it down.

WR Duke Williams, Auburn

Auburn’s 285 passing attempts ranked 118th in the nation, but for a team that’s hoping to have more balance this season, JUCO wide receiver Duke Williams will play a big part in that. Williams’ intimidating frame of 6-foot-3, 215-pounds gives quarterback Nick Marshall another reliable target opposite Sammie Coates. Williams’ is special in that he’s got the speed to burn defenses deep, but the skill to run crisp routes on the shorter passes. He’ll be a big weapon in the passing game for the Tigers this fall.

DL Jarran Reed, Alabama

Reed comes into Tuscaloosa as one of the nation’s top JUCO defensive lineman. He starts out as the backup to DJ Pettway, another defensive line JUCO transfer for the Crimson Tide. Reed can be disruptive at virtually any defensive line position. He’s big enough to play inside at 310 pounds, but quick enough to give the Tide another pass rushing option on the outside. He was arrested for a DUI back in July, so as long as he keeps out of anymore off-the-field trouble, he’ll be a significant part of the defensive line rotation.

DT CJ Johnson, Kentucky

Slowly but surely, Kentucky head coach Mark Stoops is assembling one of the best defensive lines in the SEC. With Bud Dupree, Za’Darius Smith, Jason Hatcher and now CJ Johnson suiting up, we’ll probably be seeing a lot of blue in the offensive backfields this season. Johnson comes to Kentucky by way of ASA College in Brooklyn, NY. He’s been with the Cats since January, participating in spring ball and eventually working his way up the depth chart. He’ll start off behind senior tackle Mike Douglas, but with a relatively young group of DTs, Johnson’s experience, size and strength should allow him plenty of opportunities for playing time this season.

DE DJ Pettway, Alabama

DJ Pettway returns to Alabama after a year of JUCO and being dismissed from the Crimson Tide back in early 2013. He will begin the season as the starting defensive end in Alabama’s 3-4 defense. Pettway was redshirted as a freshman, but saw action in 13 games in 2012, registering eight tackles, 2.5 sacks and four tackles for loss. With experience both in the SEC and at Alabama, Pettway holds an advantage over many of his fellow JUCO transfers as his transition back to SEC football should be a quick one.

WR Von Pearson, Tennessee

A consensus four-star recruit, Von Person could easily be the Vols’ X-factor for this season. After setting or tying every single receiving record at Feather River College, Pearson comes into the SEC with an unquestionably high work ethic and endless energy. Pearson’s greatest strength on the field lies in his athleticism as he’s been known to make several acrobatic catches throughout his career. Pearson’s made a big enough impression to be one of the Vols’ starting wide outs in their three wide-receiver sets. Could Pearson be the next Cordarrelle Patterson at Tennessee?
