The first Monday of September marks Labor Day –  a cherished holiday Americans celebrate by usually doing absolutely nothing. It’s glorious.

Now that SEC football’s first weekend has wrapped up, we’ve seen some studs and we’ve seen some duds.

Let’s check out the SEC players who decided to take the holiday early on this opening weekend of college football.

RB Leonard Fournette, LSU

Week 1 stats: 8 carries, 18 yards

The heralded LSU freshman running back’s career got off to a slow start on Saturday night as the Wisconsin Badgers held him to a measly 18 yards rushing. It was supposed to be a special night for the freshman, who was hyped up to be the first true freshman to ever win the Heisman by college football experts. He did OK in the kick return game, returning five kicks for 117 yards, but the freshman’s day running the football less than spectacular. Hopefully for the sake of SEC fans, we see him putting up bigger numbers on the ground in the future.

TE OJ Howard, Alabama

Week 1 stats: No stats recorded

For a guy that Nick Saban referred to as a “mismatch player,” OJ Howard was virtually MIA against the Mountaineers Saturday afternoon. As a part of the offense under new offensive coordinator Lane Kiffin, Howard is expected to play a significant role. His size and athleticism will be tough for a lot of the SEC linebackers to cover. But in the season-opener, Howard was real quiet. I’m not even sure Blake Sims threw his way once during the entire game. Perhaps West Virginia placed a priority on shutting down Howard, but either way, it’s tough to understand how an important player like Howard registered no catches in 60 minutes.

WR Jameon Lewis, Mississippi State

Week 1 stats: 3 receptions, 25 yards

The do-it-all receiver for the Bulldogs was quiet for much of the game on Saturday. Lewis only hauled in three catches for 25 yards and was a non-factor in Mississippi State’s 49-0 rout over Southern Miss. Overall, it was an impressive night for Dak Prescott and company, but probably a game to forget for Lewis. He’ll need to be a constant producer for the Bulldogs this season.

WR Keon Hatcher, Arkansas

Week 1 stats: 1 reception, 17 yards, dropped pass

Hatcher is the Hogs’ best wide receiver, but on Saturday he looked like anything but that. He brought in one reception for 17 yards, but his biggest blunder was his dropped pass in the first quarter.

Quarterback Brandon Allen threw a deep ball that was an absolute dime to a streaking Hatcher. It was placed right over his shoulders in a perfect spot for Hatcher to catch it and take it in for a touchdown to tie the game at 14. Instead, Hatcher let it slip right through his hands. With the way the half played out, a touchdown there leads to Arkansas going into halftime up seven against Auburn, rather than tied. Safe to say, it was a rough night for the junior wideout.

The entire South Carolina defense

Week 1 stats: 680 total yards allowed, 7 touchdowns allowed

Probably the biggest question of the weekend: Where was South Carolina’s defense Thursday night? Simple. It was watching sophomore quarterback Kenny Hill and the Texas A&M offense run and pass all over them. In what was quite the spectacle, Hill set a school-record with 511 passing yards. Did I mention it was his first game as a starter? He went on to trounce South Carolina and lead the Aggies to a 52-28 victory in Columbia.

The Gamecocks defense will want to move on and forget about this game as soon as possible.
