The SEC just completed its 10th consecutive season of leading the nation in NFL draft picks. It’s a tradition the conference plans on continuing. To do that, it all starts with recruiting.  It’s a year-round process and nobody has done it better over the past decade than the SEC.

With that in mind, here’s a look at the best prospects at each position for the 2017 recruiting class who have verbally committed or are leaning toward SEC programs:

OFFENSE

Quarterback: Tate Martell is a five-star dual-quarterback recruit from Las Vegas. He has committed to Texas A&M but will continue to entertain other offers. At 5-foot-10, 203 pounds, Martell uses his mobility to move the pocket and remain elusive. In his past two high school seasons, Martell has thrown for 5,145 yards and 72 touchdowns as well as rushing for 1,037 yards and 14 touchdowns.

He is ranked just slightly ahead of Georgia’s Jake Fromm, a 6-2, 224-pound pro-style quarterback who has thrown for 7,728 yards and 67 touchdowns with only 11 interceptions. Fromm has committed to Georgia.

Running back: Najee Harris is the No. 1 prospect in the class. He is a big, strong 6-2, 220-pound bruiser who is verbally committed to Alabama. Over the past two high school seasons, Harris has piled up 5,007 yards and 59 touchdowns. He could play anywhere he wants. If he changes his mind, USC or UCLA could be in the running.

Receiver: There are a handful of quality receivers uncommitted. But of those who have a lean, D.D. Bowie is at the top of the list. The four-star recruit has verbally committed to Ole Miss.

At 6-1, 170, Bowie is considered the No. 2 recruit out of the state of Mississippi and No. 10 in the nation at his position. But he continues to climb those lists with his long, lean athletic abilities. Quick and explosive off the line, Bowie committed to Alabama but flipped to Ole Miss midway through the 2015 season.

Offensive line: Calvin Ashley is a 6-6, 305-pound offensive tackle from Orlando, Fla. Considered the No. 2 recruit in the state and No. 3 in the country at his position, Ashley, the 10th overall recruit nationally, has committed to Auburn. However, Florida State and Florida remain strong contenders. His combination of size, quickness and mobility makes Ashley a valued recruit.

DEFENSE

Defensive line: Tyler Shelvin is a five-star recruit from Lafayette, La., and we know how hard is to pry those players away from LSU. The 6-2, 329-pound defensive tackle has committed to LSU.

He’s ranked as the top recruit in the state and ranked No. 2 nationally at his position. He is the No. 18 overall recruit and is expected to follow through on his commitment to become a Tiger. However, SEC rivals Alabama and Texas A&M haven’t given up. Shelvin has put on some weight in anticipation of becoming a premiere run-stopper in the middle of the line.

Linebacker: There are a few players ahead of him who remain uncommitted, but VanDarius Cowan is the top player with a verbal commitment. The four-star athlete from Palm Beach Gardens, Fla., has committed to Alabama. However, many still believe he will remain closer to home and perhaps end up instead at Florida State, a program he committed to before flipping to Alabama recently.

The 6-4, 217-pound outside linebacker was recruited by Alabama to play inside with an ability to rush the passer on third downs.

Defensive back: Richard LeCounte III is a four-star athlete from Georgia. The 5-10, 174-pound safety has committed to Georgia. Ranked the No. 3 overall recruit from the state and No. 2 nationally at his position, LeCounte III is also being heavily recruited by Ohio State.

However, based upon his prom outfit, which consisted of black pants and shirt with a Georgia-red vest and a UGA hat to match, it appears as though his heart is set on staying home with the Bulldogs.
