The meat of a recruiting class is made up of three and four-star prospects (unless you’re Nick Saban at Alabama) and hitting on some of those three-star players can make a big difference with depth and lead to victories.

Here are five three-star prospects from the 2012 class who have outplayed their rankings.

Bryan Cox Jr., DL, Florida

When it’s all said and done the son of the former Pro Bowl linebacker will be a three-year starter at Florida. He has 23 tackles for loss and eight sacks through his first three years and has proven to be a major cog in Florida’s strong defensive line play.

Russell Hansbrough, RB, Missouri

The three-star prospect from Arlington, Texas, finished his career at Missouri with more than 2,300 yards. His best season came in 2014 when he rushed for 1,084 yards, sixth best in the SEC, on the Tigers’ East Division championship team.

Trae Elston, DB, Ole Miss

This former three-star prospect from Oxford, Ala., started more 40 games and finished on the All-America lists for the Associated Press and ESPN.com after the 2015 season. Elston had 252 tackles and five interceptions in his four years at Ole Miss.

Brandon Holloway, All-Purpose, Mississippi State

A former three-star prospect out of Tampa, Fla., has done a little bit of everything for the Bulldogs. In 2015 he had nearly 1,400 all-purpose yards — eighth-best in the SEC — with five receiving touchdowns and one kickoff return for a touchdown.

Jonathan Jones, CB, Auburn

A three-star prospect from Carrollton, Georgia, who played in 45 games for the Tigers. In 2014 Jones had six interceptions, tied for ninth in the nation. He finished his career with 129 tackles and seven interceptions.
