A lot of SEC players are coming up against high expectations this fall.

Georgia QB Jacob Eason is among the incoming freshmen expected to make an instant impact in the SEC East. In the SEC West, Razorbacks RB Devwah Whaley is among the predicted superstar freshmen.

And let’s not forget our super sophomores who we anticipate will become household names by the end of the year.

But then there are the quieter ones. The ones who stay below the radar until you can no longer ignore them.

These 2015 freshmen may have been overlooked last year and this spring, but they are poised for a breakout season in 2016:

C Ross Pierschbacher, Alabama

The Tide will feel the loss of veteran C Ryan Kelly this fall, but head coach Nick Saban has faith in his replacement. “[I] really like Ross [Pierschbacher] at center,” Saban said. “I think he’s done a nice job and made that transition fairly well.” Pierschbacher was the Tide starter at left guard in every game last season, and we don’t doubt he’ll make an even bigger impact at his new position.

WR Jayson Stanley & WR Michael Chigbu, Georgia

Former Bulldogs WR Malcolm Mitchell was a monster on offense, but with him catching passes for the Patriots now, Georgia will need to replace him on offense. All three projected starters at wide receiver are sophomores, but Terry Godwin is one of our super sophomores. Stanley and Chigbu combined for 6 catches and 48 yards in 2015, but they showed promise in the spring, and one of them will undoubtedly break away from the pack this fall. With a quarterback like Eason, you can expect to see significantly higher numbers from this receiving corps.

S Zedrick Woods, Ole Miss

Ole Miss lost two star safeties after the 2015 season, Trae Elston and Mike Hilton, but there’s still hope for the Rebels. Woods racked up 25 tackles last year at Huskie, which is a linebacker-safety hybrid position at Ole Miss. He’s been moved to Rover — strong safety for the Rebels — and after his spring performance, he’s projected to be the starter this fall.

S Rashaan Gaulden, Tennessee

Former Vols S Brian Randolph will be sorely missed this fall, but defensive coordinator Bob Shoop has a replacement waiting in the wings. Gaulden made only nine tackles in the 2014 season, and he sat out for the full 2015 season because of a foot injury. But the time he missed has made him hungry for playing time, and the redshirt sophomore has just successfully transitioned from nickel back to safety. It looks like a good move for the Vols. According to Shoop, “[Gaulden is] fast, he can cover people, he’s got a lot of skills of a corner and a nickel, and he’s got the desire to hit like a safety.”

PK Daniel LaCamera, Texas A&M

People rarely realize how valuable a good kicker is while they still have them, but that’s not the case for Texas A&M. Aggies PK Taylor Bertolet was a big playmaker, especially in his senior year, and he placed his name permanently in the record books. Now that he’s in the NFL, the Aggies need to fill the void, and LaCamera has no choice but to step up as their guy. Admittedly, LaCamera didn’t look good in the spring game, missing all three field goal attempts. But he’s still the Aggies only viable option, and he’ll undoubtedly spend most of the summer improving and working to be just as dependable as Bertolet.
