When the clock strikes 12, SEC coaches can begin the full-court press during the recruiting season’s late stages coming out of the dead period. Here’s who each coach should contact with their first phone call:

Nick Saban, Alabama — Five-star defensive end CeCe Jefferson is the highest-ranked uncommitted target remaining on Alabama’s board and should expect to hear a call from Saban this week. The Florida prospect is visiting Auburn this weekend, so a nudge from a rival before arriving on the Plains could only help the Crimson Tide after losing two assistant coaches in the last 48 hours.

Bret Bielema, Arkansas — It wouldn’t hurt to give five-star pass rusher Byron Cowart a buzz, especially since defensive tackle Darius Philon announced his intention to leave early for the NFL Draft this week. Cowart would be a starter from Day 1 in Fayetteville, a unique recruiting tactic that can’t be said everywhere in the SEC heading into next season.

Gus Malzahn, Auburn — Hand the phone over to defensive coordinator Will Muschamp so he can plan the itinerary for this weekend’s crucial recruiting visits from five-star defenders Terry Beckner Jr., Jefferson and Cowart. Beckner Jr. is thought to be a Missouri lean, but he’s not visiting Gary Pinekl and the Tigers until Jan. 30.

Jim McElwain, Florida — This high-powered offense in Year 1 won’t be able to lift off the ground without a few behemoths up front and uncommitted target Martez Ivey, picked by most recruiting services as the nation’s top player, would give the Gators an instant edge in the trenches.

Mark Richt, Georgia — Jim Harbaugh wants four-star linebacker Roquan Smith at Michigan which is why the Bulldogs need to make contacting him priority No. 1 this week. At 6-foot-2, 210 pounds, Smith could play multiple positions on Jeremy Pruitt’s defense is Athens and would add to an already extremely talented class.

Mark Stoops, Kentucky — It could very well be a wasted conversation since five-star running back Damien Harris seems solid on Alabama, but Stoops would be doing a disservice to the Wildcats fanbase if he didn’t try and a make a last-minute pitch to the in-state star.

Les Miles, LSU — Now that South Carolina is out of picture, four-star corner Mark Fields is a gem that could fall into new defensive coordinator Kevin Steele’s lap if Miles works his late recruiting season magic. With Fields eyeing LSU and Clemson, it may not take much to lure the North Carolina native to Baton Rouge.

Hugh Freeze, Mississippi — Thanks to recent reports linking uncommitted five-star CeCe Jefferson’s infatuation with the Rebels, Freeze already has his number patiently waiting to hit send. Most consider Ole Miss the favorite at this point for the Florida native’s services, a pass-rushing monster who could make an instant splash in Oxford.

Dan Mullen, Mississippi State — In need of backfield depth, four-star ballcarrier Kentavious Thomas has listed Mississippi State, alongside Louisville, as his finalists but things have turned sour with the Bulldogs late in the recruiting season. Thomas decommitted in December, citing a lack of communication with the coaching staff. Not only does Mullen need to make the call, but an in-home visit for a final pitch is a necessity to re-establish a relationship with the Georgia native.

Gary Pinkel, Mizzou — Five-star defensive tackle Terry Beckner Jr. is on speed dial at this point, the top-rated uncommitted player from East Saint Louis who likes the Tigers. Due to Mizzou’s lack of depth up front on defense after the departures of Shane Ray and Markus Golden, it would be in Pinkel’s best interest to play up the instant starter angle.

Steve Spurrier, South Carolina — Four-star defensive end Arden Key has had his name dragged through the mud after recently announcing his second decommitment from the Gamecocks, but the Head Ball Coach needs to reassure the Lithonia, Ga., native that there’s still a spot on his roster for him if he wants it.

Butch Jones, Tennessee — Over-signing could be an issue for a class already near its max with 28 commits, but there’s still a couple players Jones and his staff are eyeing to improve the Vols next season. One of those is four-star all-purpose back Bryce Love, a player expected to visit Knoxville on Jan. 23. Before the North Carolina native flies to Stanford this weekend, Jones can send him a message that he’s interested.

Kevin Sumlin, Texas A&M — Five-star defensive tackle Daylon Mack has been committed before, but now Sumlin can dangle new defensive coordinator John Chavis in front of the massive pass rusher, one of the nation’s top interior linemen. In what is expected to be a race down to the wire with TCU, Texas and Auburn, the Aggies are confident Mack will be in College Station next season.

Derek Mason, Vanderbilt — Mason needs to stress to four-star linebacker commit Josh Smith — one of the gems of this year’s class — his importance toward the rebuilding process at Vanderbilt, who figures to be a key part of the Commodores’ defense this fall. Oklahoma is trying to get Smith to flip.
