Week 1’s 5 best individual matchups

Treon Harris vs. Will Grier — We know both Florida quarterbacks will play vs. New Mexico State, but which passer will look more impressive to coach Jim McElwain? Each offers a different skill set, but Harris has the experience and won four games as a starter in six tries last season. There’s more pressure on Grier, a touted redshirt freshman, who many thought would trot out there with the first team. Whoever finds a rhythm Saturday night in Gainesville likely makes a Week 2 start.

Todd Graham vs. Kevin Sumlin — You have to love Graham’s old-school approach at Arizona State — put your best 11 guys on defense and turn ’em loose. The Sun Devils are a team that likes to blitz, often sending cornerbacks unabated to the quarterback. Knowing this, Sumlin will have Kyle Allen ready to perform in the short passing game to take advantage of holes and mismatches offensively. Expect a high-scoring affair and classic chess match between two of college football’s top minds in Houston.

Auburn defensive line vs. Louisville offensive line — Only eight teams in college football gave up more sacks than Louisville (40) last season, not a good look going into Saturday’s a game against a front seven that’s planning to feast on a yet-to-be-announced starter under center. Will Muschamp’s first game back on defense is an intriguing storyline, as is the return of Carl Lawson and debut of five-star end Byron Cowart. Auburn’s physical advantage could prove deadly.

Tennessee vs. preseason hype — Do the Vols need to ‘win pretty’ against Bowling Green? It would certainly help after eight months of national media love. One of the perceived Eastern Division contenders is playing a few men down without Pig Howard (suspended) and a couple injured starters, but it shouldn’t mean much against an opponent that will struggle to match up athletically. After a productive offseason, Joshua Dobbs is ready to emerge as one of the nation’s best players … or is he?

Alabama’s QB(s) vs. Wisconsin’s defense — In a similar situation last season, Blake Sims used the season opener against West Virginia to find a rhythm and ‘win the team’ — something Jake Coker, Alec Morris, Cooper Bateman or whoever gets first-team snaps will try and do Saturday night at AT&T Stadium. The Crimson Tide haven’t yet solved the quarterback situation, but there’s time to do so. It’ll be interesting to see how limited Alabama’s offense will be depending on the player under center or if Lane Kiffin throws caution to the wind and opens it up.
