HOOVER, Ala. — For the most part, head coaches came into SEC Media Days, like always, with an agenda.

Preach process, be on the right side of controversial topics and don’t provide any quarterback details that haven’t yet been released.

Mission accomplished.

Those expecting actually news to come out of Hoover from under center haven’t been around since college football’s grand offseason spectacle became a featured segment on SportsCenter and had a daily presence on cable news.

Self-promotion and program spotlight is of utmost importance, not who has the edge at quarterback heading into fall practice.

Here’s a recap on what was said — or lack thereof — in Hoover pertaining to quarterback battles around the SEC:

Hugh Freeze, Ole Miss (Chad Kelly vs. Ryan Buchanan vs. Devante Kincade)

“I don’t think there’s a fair sampling yet for any of the three. And that’s why I have not put — I won’t put myself in a box on when that decision will be made. I think all three have earned the right to compete for it. I said after spring I thought Ryan was a little ahead of the other two, but the margin was so small that it certainly could be overcome. It may be two weeks into fall camp that it’s obvious, or it may be two games into the season before it’s made, but I’m not going to put myself in a box on that. I really want to evaluate, give them all a fair chance to see who’s the most efficient in leading our offense. I am excited about the competition. I think all three are talented kids.”

Steve Spurrier, South Carolina (Connor Mitch vs. Lorenzo Nunez)

“We don’t have a starter going into preseason practice. (Connor Mitch) may go out there with the first bunch, but it’s pretty much wide open. If Connor Mitch is the best, and he easily could be, he’ll be the starter. We believe in letting every player earn it and go from there.”

Mark Richt, Georgia (Brice Ramsey vs. Faton Bauta vs. Greyson Lambert)

“I have no idea who the starter is going to be. We are going to have a tremendous competition, continue that competition for that position. It’s going to — I think it’s going to take a while. We have 29 practice opportunities before the first game, and we’re going to get a rotation where we can see the guys that we want to see compete and then make a decision on who should be the starter. But right now, I don’t know who that is. When we came out of spring, I think the guys made progress. I think the guys are able to function well in our system, but to say who’s the man to lead the job, to win the job right now, I don’t have that answer.”

Nick Saban, Alabama (Jake Coker vs. David Cornwell)

“We don’t have an experienced player at that position. We did not have one last year. Blake Sims did a fantastic job. We need someone to take the bull by the horns for us this year and be that kind of player for that type of position. I think we have several guys that are capable of it; I don’t think anybody has come to the forefront as of yet, and I don’t think it’s something we can force to happen. I think we got to let it happen, and I cannot give you a timetable of when that’s going to happen.”

Mark Stoops, Kentucky (Patrick Towles vs. Drew Barker)

“There is a competition there and I’ve said it before, I think Patrick obviously has the leg up because of the experience he has and he really did some very good things at times last year. I really like the progress that he made this spring, but I also like Drew Barker and the talent that he has.”

Les Miles, LSU (Anthony Jennings vs. Brandon Harris)

“Experience isn’t something that you can just will on a guy. The good news is we have a guy who’s started eight games or so and we have a guy that’s been around it now and played through two springs and been through a fall. So our quarterback play will be better, legitimately better. There’s been some things that we’ve done to kind of script and hone to make their skills and abilities more evident. So I think we’ll get really improved quarterback play.”

Derek Mason, Vanderbilt

“We’re going to know in game week exactly what this is going to look like. Johnny McCrary played well over stretches last season. William Freebeck is a tremendously talented quarterback with big-time arm potential, but it’s about managing the game and making us better. It’s about decision-making. Both of those guys have shown they have the ability, but we need consistency. With consistency, you get confidence.”
