Tampa Bay Times writer Matt Baker, who covers both Florida and Florida State for the paper, had an interesting thought for his latest blog entry: Is the SEC East worse than the ACC Coastal?

The ACC Coastal is the division without FSU and Clemson, and has a reputation for being one of the weaker, easier divisions in college football. The SEC East, similarly, hasn’t won the game in Atlanta since 2008.

Baker first compared the two division in Sagarin ratings:

  • SEC East (average 52)
    • Florida: 16
    • Tennessee: 21
    • Georgia: 50
    • Missouri: 57
    • Vanderbilt: 68
    • Kentucky: 76
    • South Carolina: 77
  • ACC Coastal (average 43)
    • Miami: 22
    • Virginia Tech: 24
    • North Carolina: 34
    • Pitt: 40
    • Georgia Tech: 45
    • Duke: 59
    • Virginia: 78

Also worth noting, is the SEC East’ 13-3 nonconference record compared to the ACC Coastal’s 17-7. The SEC East is also at .500 against Power 5 foes (2-2) while the ACC Coastal has a losing record (4-5).

The divisions have had three head-to-head meetings so far: Georgia over North Carolina 33-24, Tennessee over Virginia Tech 45-24 and Georgia Tech over Vanderbilt 38-7.
