Former Alabama quarterback and current SEC Network analyst Greg McElroy knows a thing or two about being a signal caller. After all, he won a championship at Alabama under Nick Saban and then-offensive coordinator Jim McElwain, and he went on to play in the NFL for a couple years.

Perhaps McElroy may not have had the most sheer talent, but he was smart, competitive, timely and accurate.

McElroy’s latest piece on the SEC Network featured him predicting who will win the conference’s open quarterback jobs at Alabama, Auburn, Georgia, South Carolina and Mississippi State.

Here are his predictions and what he said:

Alabama Crimson Tide: Cooper Bateman
What he said: “I’m going to go Cooper Bateman. I know right now he’s the heir apparent based on what we saw last year: his mobility, the fact that he has played in big games before and the fact that the first game of the year is against a very capable USC team. I haven’t seen a quarterback battle in Tuscaloosa in which an older player at the position didn’t win it … A guy to keep an eye on is [freshman] Jalen Hurts.”

Auburn Tigers: John Franklin III
What he said: “He’s just too mobile. He resembles too much of what Nick Marshall was. I think the fact that they’ve lost a lot of personnel at the running back position, they’re going to need to find carries somewhere. I’m assuming those carries will go to John Franklin.”

Georgia Bulldogs: Greyson Lambert
What he said: “I’m going to go Greyson Lambert, but his leash is really short. Jacob Eason will see time against North Carolina, but Greyson Lambert wasn’t a bad player last year. The hype surrounding Jacob Eason is difficult, and you never want to start with a true freshman against a high-powered offense like North Carolina.”

South Carolina Gamecocks: Brandon McIlwain
What he said: “I think his ability to negotiate the pass rush, and he’s a young player. We know what Perry Orth was able to do last year. He as OK, not great. It’s a clean slate; it’s a new program. I’m leaning toward the true freshman, and I’m expecting him to be pretty solid.”

Mississippi State: Nick Fitzgerald
What he said: “I went to a Mississippi State practice last year, and I said this guy Fitzgerald is legit. I have concerns about replacing Dak Prescott’s intangibles, but just being able to flat out throw the football down the field, Nick Fitzgerald can absolutely do that as well as anybody in the SEC.”
