Daylon Charlot is another piece of evidence that the recruiting trail is a fickle place. Charlot, regarded as one of the best high school players in Louisiana and one of the top wide receivers in the country, had been committed to play at Alabama for 10 months. That is until he took a visit to LSU in early December, at which point he dropped his commitment to the Crimson Tide.

“I told Coach (Les) Miles that I was decommitting from Alabama when we sat to talk today,” Charlot said to NOLA.com earlier this month. “He was excited, very excited. He said they need me really bad.”

With Charlot back on the market, he is reportedly considering two SEC schools, Alabama and LSU. According to reports and speculation, he hasn’t ruled out Alabama. Which would make the best fit for the burgeoning deep threat?

The case for LSU

Patterson would step on campus with a good chance to be one of the better receivers in LSU’s rotation very quickly. According to Charlot, Miles has told him that LSU could badly use his skills. The Tigers have two young quarterbacks on the roster, and while they don’t throw much they like to go deep when they do. With Charlot’s big frame and speed, he’s the ideal player to play “go and get it” alongside deep threat Travin Dural. Charlot would also be a candidate for serious playing time early. The Tigers gave significant snaps to just four receivers last year, three of them true freshmen and one, Dural, a redshirt sophomore, so if LSU improves throwing the ball next season there will be a role for Charlot.

The case for Alabama

Alabama is behind LSU in recent years when it comes to churning out NFL-ready talent, but the Tide have a pretty good track record themselves. Nick Saban’s team has the best kind of problem to have, though: too much talent on hand. On top of 2015 five-star commit Calvin Ridley, Alabama already has a handful of other touted prospects on hand. Robert Foster was a five-star recruit in 2013 and has yet to see the field much, while the same goes for 2014 four-star Cameron Sims. The good news for Charlot if he chooses Alabama is that there will be plenty of targets to go around. The Crimson Tide are losing their top three receivers from 2014, and while Charlot would have to beat out a host of talented players for playing time he’d have a chance to make an impact right off the bat.
