According to SEC spokesman Chuck Dunlap, infamous referee Penn Wagers has announced his retirement from officiating, as has fellow SEC referee Matt Moore.

Fans are more likely to recognize Wagers’ name after his history of controversial calls while working in the SEC.

In 2007 he was the head referee of the World’s Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party, and after Georgia embarrassed Florida with a team-wide touchdown celebration early in the action, Wagers merely enforced a pair of unsportsmanlike conduct penalties, which did nothing more than back up the Dawgs’ kickoff team. UGA won the game going away.

In 2013, Wagers was once again at the center of controversy during a Georgia football game. Wagers and head coach Mark Richt had choice words for one another, but in order to avoid the situation escalating Richt turned away from Wagers to discuss a call with another official. That didn’t stop Wagers from following Richt to the new conversation, bodying up the head coach and eventually assessing him his only unsportsmanlike conduct penalty in 15 years at UGA.

These are only two of a long list of blown or controversial calls made by Wagers or his crew during his SEC career, but that list has finally been capped now that Wagers has announced his retirement.

It seems next year SEC fans will have to find someone new to take their anger out on.
