The streak may be over, but the SEC is still the best conference in college football.

From 2006-13, the Southeastern Conference produced a BCS champion each season. The SEC was so dominant, it provided the only BCS title game where both teams represented the same conference (Alabama vs. LSU, 2012). The talent level is unmatched as the SEC annually dominates in representation at the NFL Draft.

Speaking of talent level, since 2006 the Southeastern Conference has produced four Heisman Trophy winners. Of the other conferences, only the Big 12 has been represented twice in that span.

One week into the 2014 season, the SEC remains the top conference in college football. Outside of Vanderbilt’s shocking loss, the SEC asserted its dominance, going 8-1 in non-conference games to open the season, including wins against ranked and quality opponents.

This past weekend, SEC players took the national stage in the season’s first three games, as well as several nationally televised match ups. Not only was the dominance of the Southeastern on full display, it also propelled standouts such as Todd Gurley and Kenny Hill to showcase their skills and become early Heisman favorites.

Florida State was the best team in college football last season, but the ACC is hardly a comparable option. The biggest threat to the SEC as the NCAA’s best conference is the Pac-12. Several programs have become national houses of the past few seasons. Some have even gone as far to say as the Pac-12 has already surpassed the SEC as the toughest conference in the country.

Every season people try to claim that the SEC is “overrated” or “overhyped” and every year they are proven wrong. The SEC will ultimately prove these claims to be false once again. The SEC will continue silencing the doubt and envy of other conferences, even as college football moves to a new format.

In past seasons, the playoff system would have created an even greater likelihood for an all-SEC championship, even before the controversial 2012 game. Some conferences are fortunate to have one team in the top-4. The SEC consistently has two by regular seasons end. The new playoff system will further prove that the Southeastern Conference is the premiere conference in college football and will continue its reign moving forward.
