It’s a surprise to no one who follows the SEC, but SEC West teams are dominating the recruiting rankings in the midst of the 2017 cycle.

Despite having just one five-star commitment, LSU is ranked No. 3 in the country by the 247Sports Composite recruiting rankings behind Ohio State and Oklahoma. Alabama, with two five-stars already in the fold, is ranked No. 5 after Miami. The Tigers have 12 commitments, including one five-star and five four-stars.

Georgia (No. 7), Mississippi State (No. 10) and Kentucky (No. 16) round out the SEC teams in the top 25 as of June 1. Texas A&M recently slipped from No. 25 to No. 27.

If Alabama’s top recruits hold, the Crimson Tide will add to the long line of top shelf running backs and offense linemen. No. 1 overall recruit Najee Harris, a five-star running back from Antioch, Calif., is 6-2, 220 pounds. Another five-star is offensive tackle Alex Leatherwood, a 6-6, 315-pounder from Pensacola, Fla. Leatherwood committed about a year ago, while Harris made his pledge in April 2015. Leatherwood is the seventh-ranked player from Florida in this class.

The crown jewel of Les Miles’ class is defensive tackle Tyler Shelvin, a five-star recruit who committed in March 2015. Shelvin is 6-foot-2, 329 pounds from Crowley, La., the top-ranked player from Louisiana.

The Tigers again are leaning on the talent-rich Louisiana recruiting base, home to half of their commits. But what’s a bit unusual is the six out-of-state commitments. If LSU signs more than half of its players from outside the state, it would be just the fourth time since 2007. The program did it in 2007, 2013 and 2014, the Advocate reported.

They did it with a “five in five” recruiting surge in May, when the Tigers recently secured five commitments in five days. And it moved them into the top five of national rankings. The class is a diverse mix of positions that include a running back, linebacker, receiver, fullback, athlete, two defensive linemen, two quarterbacks and three offensive linemen.

That momentum came on the heels of a staff overall and assistant coach promotions that included Dave Aranda, Jabbar Juluke, Dameyune Craig and Ed Orgeron named recruiting coordinator. A far cry from the turmoil of November.

“I think this is a vintage old school LSU class because there’s so much physicality coming to Baton Rouge,” 247Sports national recruiting analyst Barton Simmons told the Advocate. “It’s big bodies that’ll beat you up. It’s the brand of football Les Miles has played. It’s the way they’re recruiting.”
