There’s no question that the Southeastern Conference has great recruiters top to bottom.

For those that aren’t familiar with the term “recruiters” these are basically assistant coaches, who are the ones that put in the majority of the work on the recruiting trail, thanks in part to the NCAA’s restrictions on head coaches being on the road to recruit.

Coaches have become superstars in the SEC (and elsewhere) based on their ability to recruit and each seems to have a varying degree of impact from cycle-to-cycle.

Here are the top five for this cycle (right now) in the league, according to 247Sports recruiter rankings, which are based on 247Sports Composite prospect rankings (industry-wide).

1. Bradley Dale Peveto, LSU safeties and special teams coach

Peveto right now is the top-ranked recruiter in the league and has been instrumental in the Tigers’ run to the No. 1 class in the 2016 cycle. He is the primary recruiter for recent five-star defensive tackle commit Rashard Lawrence and also went into Houston and landed four-star safety Eric Monroe earlier in the cycle.

2. Kevin Sherrer, Georgia defensive assistant

Sherrer deserves a lot of credit as he was a part of building the Bulldogs’ elite class under former coach Mark Richt and then stayed on to help Kirby Smart finish things off. He’s been particularly effective landing defensive lineman as was the primary recruiter of record for four-star early enrollee Julian Rochester and is currently for four-star defensive tackle Tyler Clark and four-star defensive end Chauncey Manac.

3. Matt Luke, Ole Miss offensive line coach

Luke led the charge for the Rebels to land the nation’s top offensive tackle- five-star Greg Little from Allen (Texas) High, beating out Alabama, Texas A&M and others for the elite prospect. Luke also is the primary recruiter overall this cycle for four outstanding offensive line prospects and is a big reason Ole Miss has one of the top offensive line hauls in the country.

4. Rodney Garner, Auburn assistant head coach/defensive line coach

Garner has been one of the best recruiters in the SEC for nearly two decades, but the work he has done at his alma mater this cycle may be his best effort yet considering a hunk of the rest of the Tigers’ defensive staff — Will Muschamp, Travaris Robinson and Lance Thompson — now coach at South Carolina where Muschamp got the head coaching job.

Losing that trio would be enough to cripple the defensive recruiting efforts of most programs, but Garner has led the charge to stay the course, Auburn has one of the best defensive line classes in the country and that was a huge need for the Tigers this cycle. Five-star Marlon Davidson and elite four-stars Antwuan Jackson and Paul James highlight the haul.

5. Chris Rumph, Florida defensive line coach

This is the best class that Rumph, who formerly was an assistant at Clemson, Alabama and Texas, has had individually and validates his reputation as an outstanding recruiter. Shavar Manuel, Jordan Smith and elite riser Antonneous Clayton (who is the best pass rusher in the country in my opinion) highlight and transformational defensive line haul for Rumph and the Gators, who currently have a top five overall class.
