Florida enjoyed a huge win by whipping Ole Miss, 38-10, on Saturday. It was also a big night individually for one UF defender.

Antonio Morrison, a linebacker from Bellwood, Ill., caught the attention of Phil Savage, the executive director of the Reese’s Senior Bowl.

“That was the guy who really stepped up last week,” Savage said. “He was coming off an injury and people were wondering if he would make it back and he has and he is really making an impression.”

The 6-foot-1, 229-pound hybrid linebacker/defensive end, had 16 tackles against the then-No. 3 Rebels, five of them solo. He also had 3.5 tackles for loss and a half sack.

Savage, who doubles as the color analyst for the Alabama Football Network, also got to see some Georgia Bulldogs that are now appearing on his radar.

“Their offensive tackle John Theus is a prospect,” Savage said. “He is one of several players they have even though most of their better prospects are underclassmen.”

Theus is 6-foot-6, weighs 303 pounds and has excellent footwork.

Also on offense, receiver Malcolm Mitchell is still a candidate to play in the all-star game in Mobile. He leads the team with 23 catches for a 16-yard average and three touchdowns.

Defensively, a pair of Bulldogs grabbed Savage’s attention.

“Jordan Jenkins, the linebacker, is a great combination player,” Savage said. “He could either play linebacker or as a rush end (in the NFL). He is having a solid year.”

He is second on the team with 29 tackles and leads the Bulldogs with 7.5 tackles for loss and three sacks.

Another defender suddenly jumped out to Savage, although he is new in Athens. Linebacker Jake Ganus came to Georgia after transferring from Alabama-Birmingham after that school shut down its football program. Ganus has continued to shine like he did for the Blazers.

“After he transferred, he became an emotional leader for (Georgia),” Savage said. “He is putting together a season that has us looking at him.”

Ganus is tied with Jenkins with 29 tackles on the year. He also has an interception this season.

Savage is back on the road this week, heading to New England to spend two days at ESPN and observing practice at UMass. He will be at the Alabama-Arkansas game Saturday and his scouts will be reporting the players moving up and down the Senior Bowl watch list.
