The world of college sports is ever-changing. In programs where a revolving door of student athletes take to the court, field and gymnasium, fans and alumni alike often undergo periods of emotional turmoil while embracing their fandom. There is one constant in both times of victory and defeat, however – any true die-hard will continue to rep their team’s colors no matter what the score reads after the final tick.

As the college football season enters its sixth week of play on Thursday, the weather grows colder and the competition heats up on the gridiron. Both factors are being exemplified in secondary market ticket prices and respective merchandise sales, as reported by ticket resale ticket aggregator TiqIQ and collegiate sweater retailer Tipsy Elves. With teams like Georgia, Tennessee and Alabama leading the way in terms of top-priced games, all three schools are finding a similar demand for their gear online.

While Notre Dame serves as the most expensive team in college football this season, it is the Georgia Bulldogs who rank on both the TiqIQ Top 25 and Tipsy Elves’ Top-Selling Teams. According to TiqIQ, the average secondary market price for Georgia tickets at Sanford Stadium this season is $235.47. The Bulldogs also serve as the ninth top-selling team on Tipsy Elves.

Perhaps an even stronger correlation between ticket prices and merchandise sales exists for the Tennessee Volunteers, who claim the fourth most expensive college football ticket prices on TiqIQ and the third spot on Tipsy Elves’ Top-Selling Teams list. The average secondary market price for Tennessee tickets is $199.46, with this Saturday’s game against Georgia serving as its top-priced game remaining at Neyland Stadium this season ($346.60 avg./$156 get-in).

Other teams that appear both on the TiqIQ Top 25 and Top-Selling Teams list on Tipsy Elves include Michigan and Penn State. Looking to prove a point after a forgettable 5-7 2014 season, the Wolverines and their addition of new head coach Jim Harbaugh have spearheaded ticket prices on the secondary market, jumping from last season’s average of $112.64 to $171.14 this year. They own the No. 7 spot on the Tipsy Elves Top-Selling Teams list.

The Nittany Lions enter the sixth week of play with a 4-1 record and winners of their last four. Prior to the start of the season they owned a $133.19 ticket average on the secondary market, good enough for the 18th most expensive team this season. With an estimated 645,000 living alumni, Penn State is a top seller on Tipsy Elves, claiming the eighth spot on the Top 10 teams.

So what is the exact correlation between top-selling college tickets and merchandise? It appears that there is no clear-cut and definitive trend, though many schools that garner big demand on ticket resale outlets also see a massive retail push for their online apparel. As dynasties form and programs and players are propelled into the limelight, rest assured that demand for both tickets and affiliating team clothing will remain a major marketing factor in the college sports world.
