The college football community received tragic news Saturday when it was reported that Troy University football player Nathan Harris died in a motorcycle accident in his hometown, Gulf Shores, Ala.

Harris, 19, was driving his motorcycle around 8:30 a.m. Saturday when it struck the back of a flatbed truck with a tandem trailer carrying lumber, according to an AL.com report. Further details about the cause of crash have not yet been determined.

“Nate was a tremendous person and a very caring young man,” Troy head coach Neal Brown said in a statement. “While his time here at Troy University was brief, his impact was felt by many. He was loved by his teammates and had a positive effect on our team’s culture in a short time.”

Troy athletics director Jeremy McClain also offered his condolences in a statement.

“This is an unthinkable tragedy and the thoughts and prayers of the Troy Athletics Department and the Troy University community are with Nathan’s family and friends,” McClain said. “It is devastating to see a young life end in such a heartbreaking way, and we will provide support and comfort for his teammates, friends and coaches as they go through the grieving process.”

Harris’ high school coach, Ben Blackmon, spoke to AL.com:

“I could go on and on about Nathan Harris,” Blackmon said. “He was tough, gritty. He was such a special young man. He lived such a special life. He loved people. He loved Jesus. Of all the players I’ve ever coached there was never a doubt in my mind that Nathan would be with Jesus one day. He got up every day and read his Bible.”

At Gulf Shores High, Harris was twice voted as the “man of character” on the team according to Blackmon. After high school, Harris walked on at Troy after overcoming a knee injury. He was the Trojans’ holder on extra points in 2015.

Our thoughts are with Harris’ family and the Troy football program.
