The 2016 season may have just wrapped up, but it’s hard not to start looking ahead to the 2017 season, especially when Week 1 has a full slate of marquee matchups including Alabama vs. FSU, Texas A&M vs. UCLA, Michigan vs. Florida and Tennessee vs. Georgia Tech.

USA Today handicapper Danny Sheridan joined “The Paul Finebaum Show” on Tuesday to give his best guesses on some of the biggest Week 1 showdowns:

  • Alabama –4 vs. FSU (Atlanta)
  • Texas A&M at UCLA -3
  • LSU -14 vs. BYU (Houston)
  • Florida vs. Michigan -7 (Dallas)
  • Tennessee -4 vs. Georgia Tech (Atlanta)
  • South Carolina vs. NC State -7 (Charlotte)

While Georgia’s Week 1 game against Appalachian State wasn’t one of the matchups talked about, Sheridan did call the Bulldogs his pick in the SEC East. He thinks Florida and Tennessee could both contend for the division if either school finds a quarterback.

The Volunteers are entering the post-Josh Dobbs era on Rocky Top, and Dobbs’ successor, likely Jarrett Guarantano, will be making his starting debut against a Power 5 opponent in Georgia Tech. Journeyman transfer Luke Del Rio will be back at UF, but the Gators could be debuting a redshirt freshman quarterback, either Feleipe Franks or Kyle Trask, against the Wolverines.

In the SEC West, Sheridan thinks it will be either Alabama or Auburn going to Atlanta. The Crimson Tide’s opening week clash against FSU is already shaping up to be one of the top games of the 2017 season while Auburn takes on defending national champion Clemson on the road in Week 2.
