The SEC West continues to dominate their opponents as every team that played won their game yesterday. Alabama, LSU, Ole Miss, Mississippi State and Texas A&M all played cupcake opponents, but they took care of business like they should have. Arkansas looked very impressive in a 21-point road victory over Texas Tech and Auburn had a bye week.

Here’s what we learned about every SEC West team after an exciting Week 3.

Alabama Crimson Tide

Week 3 result: Defeated Southern Miss, 52-12

What we learned: By Alabama standards, the Crimson Tide looked a bit sluggish and uninspired against an overwhelmed Southern Miss team as they were only beating the Golden Eagles 21-6 at halftime. In the end, the Crimson Tide expanded their lead, eventually winning by 40 points. Quarterback Blake Sims again got the bulk of the reps, completing 12-of-17 passing attempts for 168 yards and two touchdowns and it sure looks like he’ll be the starter going forward based off of yesterday’s performances.

Besides more clarity on the quarterback situation, not too much else was revealed about Alabama, especially in a game as mismatched as this one. They’ll get a much tougher test next week when they open up their SEC schedule against the Gators next week in Tuscaloosa. The Crimson Tide are 17.5 point favorites heading into the matchup.

Arkansas Razorbacks

Week 3 result: Defeated Texas Tech, 49-28

What we learned: Arkansas delivered a statement win yesterday in Lubbock, throttling the Texas Tech Red Raiders 49-28. In a game featuring differing offensive styles, it was Arkansas’ physical, power run game that dominated the tempo over Texas Tech’s Air Raid offense. Thanks to an incredible 438 rushing yards, Arkansas overwhelmingly controlled the time of possession, limiting the Red Raiders to just over 19 minutes with the football. This is without a doubt the biggest win for Bret Bielema and his coaching staff at Arkansas since arriving last fall. The win in Lubbock also keeps the Hogs’ realistic hopes of reaching a bowl game very much alive. They’ll soon be tested even further, however, with an upcoming three-game stretch against Texas A&M, Alabama and Georgia after a non-conference clash against Northern Illinois.

Auburn Tigers

Week 3 result: Bye week

What we learned: Not much since the Tigers were on a bye. They’ll face a tough challenge this coming Thursday, however, with a road game against Top 25-ranked Kansas State.

LSU Tigers

Week 3 result: Defeated UL Monroe, 31-0

What we learned: Much like Alabama, a game like this doesn’t tell you much about LSU. They did post a shutout for the second week in a row, further proving that his LSU Tigers’ defense is as good this year as it has ever been. Quarterback Anthony Jennings didn’t really impress anybody with his 139 passing yards and one interception, so once again it was the running backs – Kenny Hilliard and Leonard Fournette – that led the charge for the offense with two scores and 102 rushing yards between them. Running back Darrel Williams also added two scores of his own.

For the most part, LSU was on cruise control. Next week will be a much better test for LSU’s stingy defense as Mississippi State and quarterback Dak Prescott travel to Baton Rouge to take on the Tigers.

Mississippi State Bulldogs

Week 3 results: Defeated South Alabama, 35-3

What we learned: Mississippi State played another cupcake opponent, however, this one was a little different since it was a road game. The Jaguars of South Alabama put up little resistance though as the Bulldogs blew out USA 35-3.  Quarterback Dak Prescott continued to play well, scoring another two touchdowns, along with 340 total yards. After three weeks of cupcake opponents, Mississippi State gets their first real test of the season next weekend with a night game against LSU in Tiger Stadium. Another strong performance from Prescott, especially against a top-notch LSU defense, could put him at the forefront of the Heisman Trophy race.

Ole Miss Rebels

Week 3 results: Defeated UL Lafayette, 56-15

What we learned: As great as Ole Miss has been playing in recent weeks, the quality of opponent has been lacking. With Vanderbilt last week and UL Lafayette yesterday, quarterback Bo Wallace has taken advantage of the weak secondaries, throwing for a combined 636 yards and five touchdowns. The defense will always be there for the Rebels, so it’ll come down to the play of Wallace that determines just how far Ole Miss can go this season.

The senior quarterback will get another week to improve with another cupcake game against Memphis before a tough five-game stretch that’ll feature four games against Alabama, Texas A&M, Auburn and LSU.

Texas A&M Aggies

Week 3 results: Defeated Rice, 38-10

What we learned: In a huge surprise, the Texas A&M Aggies struggled to put up a ton of points offensively against Rice last night. They eventually finished the night with 38 points, but the Aggies weren’t all that impressive against an opponent they should have put away much earlier.

Of course, quarterback Kenny Hill added to his impressive season stats with another 300 passing yards and four touchdowns, but overall it was not as pretty of a victory that we’ve become accustomed to seeing from this Texas A&M teams. It may not have been another 50-plus points from Texas A&M, but based off of past weeks, there’s probably no reason to worry about an uglier 38-10 victory.

The Aggies move on to play a road game against SMU next week before a neutral-site matchup against Arkansas.
