With Week 5 of college football action in the books, we decided to take a look at what the media buzz is around the nation regarding the SEC:

PAT FORDE, YAHOO SPORTS

Forde let Georgia have it for its pregame antics prior to kickoff against Alabama that were followed by a lackluster performance and a 38-10 loss. This was the first time the Crimson Tide were underdogs since 2009, and Nick Saban’s squad responded well by dismantling the Bulldogs in Athens.

Forde writes:

“Georgia came out talking the talk, then walked the walk – straight into a brick-wall Alabama defense. Final score of this soggy mismatch: Alabama 38, Georgia 10. Not only was the final score embarrassing to the nation’s No. 8 team, so was the display of fake juice.”

GREG OSTENDORF, ESPN

Ostendorf was somewhat critical of Ole Miss but mostly decided to praise Florida, calling the Gators a legit College Football Playoff and SEC title contender. He uses the transitive property to strengthen his argument, stating that if Ole Miss can beat Alabama and Florida can beat Ole Miss, then why not the Gators on top at the end of the year?

Ostendorf writes:

“Ole Miss was supposed to be the SEC’s top contender for the College Football Playoff. It didn’t look that way Saturday. The top contender looked more like No. 25 Florida, the team that dominated the No. 3 Rebels from start to finish.

Sure, Alabama was impressive at Georgia. But after winning 38-10 against the team that beat Alabama, the Gators look legit.”

DANIEL UTHMAN, USA TODAY SPORTS

Speaking of the 38-10 losses that Georgia and Ole Miss had to endure, Uthman decided to include the Bulldogs and Rebels as two of his losers in his weekly “winners and losers” column. He writes that while the losses don’t end either team’s chances of making the College Football Playoff, they certainly hurt them and will surely cause the public perception of these teams to change.

COLIN BECHT, SPORTS ILLUSTRATED

One of Becht’s biggest takeaways from Week 5 was its impact at the top of the SEC. He also goes as far as to say that the Gators’ big win and continual improvement puts them right in the discussion for top teams in the SEC.

Becht writes:

“If the Gators’ offense maintains the dramatic improvement it demonstrated against the Rebels, McElwain could have Florida in contention for an SEC title far sooner than expected.”

TERYN SCHAEFER & MATTHEW COCA, CBS SPORTS

In CBS’ online broadcast “SEC Today,” Schaefer and Coca give a weekly recap of the conference’s happenings and dole out several awards like defensive and offensive players of the week. Florida quarterback Will Grier was their Freshman of the Week last week, and this week, he became the Offensive Player of the Week. CBS also takes a look at where SEC teams stand in the latest Associated Press Top 25 Poll.
