Steve Spurrier promised a revamped defense after last season’s struggles led to a disappointing 7-6 campaign for the preseason Eastern Division favorites.

According to ESPN, Chicago Bears assistant Jon Hoke, Spurrier’s former defensive coordinator at Florida, has agreed to ‘oversee’ the Gamecocks defense and is expected to arrive in Columbia, S.C., this week.

Spurrier has said throughout the offseason that he expected to retain all of his defensive assistants for the next season, but several could switch titles to make room for Hoke, the older brother of former Michigan coach Brady Hoke.

Hoke has coached in the NFL since 2002 and is brought in to correct a unit that below the norm last season, finishing with a league-worst 14 sacks while giving up 30.4 points per game — the most in the Spurrier era. Hoke was not retained in Chicago after the Bears’ recent hiring of head coach John Fox.

John Whittle of 247Sports is reporting that South Carolina’s Board of Trustees has called an unscheduled meeting for Thursday afternoon to discuss an athletics contract. Hoke’s hiring would need the board’s approval to become official.
