Former Ole Miss offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Dan Werner was brought in to Columbia this offseason by Will Muschamp for two reasons, to help Jake Bentley progress and to speed up the Gamecock offense. According to Bentley, his new QB coach is already paying off for South Carolina’s offense.

During his recent media availability, the Gamecock signal caller noted how quickly the offense has been able to adapt to Werner’s teachings and punish the program’s defense for failing to keep pace. That’s the very thing Muschamp had in mind when he hired Werner and the team’s QB is already seeing the offense’s work pay off this spring.

“It’s been a big difference for us. We can see it in our defense. Every day it seems like they are way out of position and we get a touchdown just because we are going so fast,” Bentley said. “It might be a little bit faster than it would be on game day but trying to make it as fast as we can; it has been a big advantage for us.”

Bentley also discussed how he’s adjusted to the transition to his new QB coach’s system.

“It takes a while because you have to get the whole process of it. You don’t really get to see as much, but then again, you don’t overthink anything — you make a decision and go with it,” Bentley added. “Whether it’s good or bad, you are playing fast and that’s the big thing that we talk about — make a decision and go with it.”

The rising junior also stated that while Werner isn’t looking to drastically change his game, he has helped with fundamental issues that should prepare him for his best collegiate season to date. Bentley believes the results won’t come overnight but the work put in this offseason following Werner’s teachings will be noticeable by the time the season rolls around.
