South Carolina needs a spark on offense in the worst way.

Only three teams in the FBS have yet to score 100 points this season, and with a dead-last nine offensive touchdowns through six games, the Gamecocks are one of them.

Having already started two different quarterbacks in 2016, first-year coach Will Muschamp is reportedly close to burning the redshirt on freshman Jake Bentley and giving him his first shot under center this weekend against UMass.

Here’s Josh Kendall from The State and his thoughts on the potential move:

“It’s important to note that even if the plan early in the week is to start Bentley, this is the kind of decision that coaches could get nervous about as the moment of truth draws nearer,” he wrote. “So even if the Gamecocks prep Bentley all week to be the starter, if they don’t like what they see or simply rethink their decision, they could go back to senior Perry Orth, who could be reasonably expected to execute the game plan without much prep work during the week.”

Orth and freshman Brandon McIlwain have shared time leading the South Carolina offense and that’s resulted in a huge struggle to put move the chains. Both have combined to complete a modest number of passes (57.7 percent), but with 6.31 yards per attempt and an FBS-worst two touchdowns through the air.

Bentley, son of running backs coach Bobby Bentley, was a four-star prospect and ranked as the No. 10 pro-style quarterback from the 2016 recruiting class. Also of note, Bentley was originally slated to be a 2017 recruit but reclassified to the 2016 class to join South Carolina a season early.

With a 2-4 (1-4) record and a small window of opportunity for a bowl game remaining, it wouldn’t hurt to go all-in on a chance to win four of the next six games.

“A football person I trust believes Bentley has the chance to be the best offensive player in the school’s history before his career is complete,” Kendall wrote. “Even if that is true, it’s a lot to expect him to turn around a moribund offense in his first career start. This is not a friendly position for a freshman quarterback.”

South Carolina will host UMass (1-6) on Saturday at noon ET.
