For some bizarre and inexplicable reason, skill players within college football are having a hard time holding onto the ball.

No, this isn’t in terms of fumbling or ball security when trying to break tackles. This is in reference to dropping the ball right before running into the end zone for a score.

This phenomenon has been becoming more frequent by the week — as evidenced by it happening twice this past weekend — with Cal running back Vic Enwere and Oklahoma athlete Joe Mixon both demonstrating this flub. Clemson receiver Ray-Ray McCloud also was victim to this momentary lapse in concentration the prior weekend.

South Carolina head coach Will Muschamp was asked about this trend, and whether it’d be a potential issue for his team. The Gamecocks’ leader had a funny response to the question (via CoachingSearch.com).

“We’ve had a hard time getting there, we dang sure don’t want to drop it before we get there,” said Muschamp. This surely correlates to the fact South Carolina has only five offensive touchdowns within its first three games.

He was then asked about redshirting some of his freshmen, and whether he’d lift the proverbial restriction. Perhaps trying for a spot on Comedy Central, Muschamp responded with this witty retort:

“There’s nothing wrong with redshirting. I redshirted. I wasn’t any good, but I was redshirted.”
