The Houston Texans recently hired a new GM in Brian Gaine, and Gaine isn’t about to let star DE/OLB Jadeveon Clowney get away.

Clowney, a former South Carolina star and the No. 1 overall pick in the 2014 NFL Draft, has finally started living up to his potential, recording 9.5 sacks and 20 tackles for a loss last season.

Clowney has a fifth-year team option for $13.8 million coming his way next year, but the Texans may not wait that long to sign him to an extension.

According to the Houston Chronicle, Gaine wants to make sure Clowney is taken care of, potentially offering him a deal that could make him the highest-paid non-quarterback in the league:

Clowney’s contract could exceed the six-year, $114.1 million contract of Denver Broncos pass rusher Von Miller. That deal includes $70 million guaranteed and an average annual salary of $19.016 million.

The Texans already have a star pass rusher in J.J. Watt, who is also making big money, so it’ll be interesting to see if Houston can build a competitive defense with lesser-paid players at the other positions.

However, you can’t let Clowney get away right now, especially not when he’s playing the way he played in 2017 while Watt was injured.
