More changes appear to be coming to Will Muschamp’s staff in 2019.

In some staff shuffling Wednesday, South Carolina hired Thomas Brown as the new running backs coach and moved Bobby Bentley to tight ends coach, dismissing Pat Washington. Reports indicate Washington won’t be the only coach leaving the Gamecocks staff.

Josh Kendall of The State is reporting that defensive assistant Lance Thompson is not expected to return for the 2019 season. Kendall’s article notes that ABC of Columbia reported similar news that Thompson “will not be kept.”

A familiar face in the SEC, Thompson has coached at Alabama (1999-2000; 2012-14), LSU (2002-03), Tennessee (2009-11) and Auburn (2015). He left Auburn to follow Will Muschamp to South Carolina to be the defensive line coach, but was moved to defensive tackles for the 2018 season. Mike Peterson coached the outside linebackers, Bucks and defensive ends.

At Alabama, Thompson helped land 5-star recruits Julio Jones, Da’Swahn Hand, Rashaan Evans and Jonathan Allen. In the 2019 recruiting cycle, he served as the secondary recruiter on South Carolina’s headlining signee, 5-star strong-side defensive end Zacch Pickens.

One would expect that an SEC veteran connected to the Nick Saban coaching tree won’t go long without finding a new gig.
