Hours after South Carolina received a commitment from 2017 TE Will Register, the team got another verbal pledge after the conclusion of Saturday’s “Gamecock Showcase” camp.

Versatile defensive back J.J. Givens of Mechanicsville, Va., chose South Carolina after visiting the campus.

“They genuinely have my best interest outside of football and they are definitely going to take care of me,” Givens said, according to The State newspaper. “I feel like I can come here and have an instant impact playing DB, especially at the corner position because I’m long, lanky and versatile. I definitely feel like I can bring what South Carolina needs to be pushed over the hump.

“It just made me fall in love and after I talked with Coach Spurrier and Coach Hoke in person I just had to pull the trigger.”

At 6-foot-2 and 174 pounds, 247Sports’ composite ranking lists Givens as a three-star player. South Carolina’s fifth commitment for 2016, Givens also represents the team’s first defensive back in the class. The Gamecocks’ pass defense struggled in ’14 and remains young, but could use some more depth.

Givens had been considering Penn State, Arizona State, Michigan, Michigan State, Wake Forest and Ole Miss as well.

Several other South Carolina targets came away from the weekend with positive things to say.
