South Carolina’s big recruiting weekend has already paid some dividends as the Gamecocks have secured the commitment of three-star linebacker Sherrod Greene.

Upon gaining the commitment, South Carolina head coach Will Muschamp took to Twitter to announce the news:

The 6-foot-1, 225-pound Greene is rated as the No. 20 outside linebacker prospect in the nation and the No. 10 overall prospect from North Carolina, according to 247Sports. Greene was also a participant in The Opening Finals this summer, a camp reserved for only the nation’s elite football prospects.

Greene currently holds 11 scholarship offers in total and has been extended an offer from Alabama, Cal, North Carolina and Virginia Tech among others.

The opportunity for playing time awaiting him in 2017 apparently played a role in Greene’s decision:

“I really have an opportunity with them losing three seniors next year and I would be coming up as they were leaving,” Greene said recently, according to Phil Kornblut of The State. “Every time I go there it feels like home.”

But it isn’t just the opportunity that should elevate Greene to a starter’s role, it’s his talent. According to ESPN National Recruiting Analyst Gerry Hamilton, Greene has the talent to excel for the Gamecocks and should be starter for South Carolina at some point in his career.

Following Greene’s commitment, South Carolina is now up to 18 total commitments for the 2017 recruiting cycle.
