Here’s a couple grades after the Gamecocks’ loss to Kentucky on Saturday. At the halfway point, South Carolina’s arguably the most overrated team in college football this season at 3-3 after starting No. 9:

OFFENSE: C

The raw numbers look nice — 32 first downs and 500 yards on 85 plays — but Dylan Thompson’s two interceptions down the stretch were a direct result of Steve Spurrier’s refusal to run the football late in the game which caused near instantaneous questions concerning his unwillingness to play the hot hand. Mike Davis rushed for a season-high 183 yards and three touchdowns, but didn’t get a chance on South Carolina’s final drive. Kentucky scored 20 points off turnovers including the game-winning interception return for a score by Bud Dupree with 2:29 to play.

DEFENSE: D

All four of Kentucky’s rushing touchdowns came from the Wildcat formation, a set the Gamecocks have failed miserably against during Lorenzo Ward’s tenure as defensive coordinator. Kentucky scored touchdowns on all three trips to the red zone and finished with 447 yards of total offense. Jojo Kemp (131 yards, 3 TD) averaged 7.7 yards per carry while Braylon Heard managed an 11.2 per touch burst (67 yards, TD). The Gamecocks did manage their seventh sack of the year, but Kentucky quarterback Patrick Towles was rarely pressured and made the secondary look elementary on a trick play for a wide open 48-yard touchdown to Ryan Timmons in the third quarter. Freshman defensive back D.J. Smith was ejected for targeting during the frame.

SPECIAL TEAMS: B

South Carolina kicker Elliott Fry made his 10th consecutive field goal try, but the Gamecocks allowed an average of 27.0 yards per kickoff return on three tries.

COACHING: F

Often the case this season, Spurrier seems to have outsmarted himself again in crunch time. After a deliberate focus on the run early led to a 14-0 lead, the South Carolina coaching staff decided the Gamecocks were better suited through the air. Scoring drives stopped when they were air-driven and Kentucky got back into the game. Spurrier ignoring South Carolina’s runnin game in the fourth quarter was a mind-numbing choice.

OVERALL: D

South Carolina’s not a good football team. Kentucky’s second win over the Gamecocks during Spurrier’s tenure was the second straight game in which South Carolina squandered a double-digit lead in the fourth quarter. Getting to a bowl game at 3-3 will be quite the challenge at this point considering South Carolina still has road games at Auburn, Florida and Clemson.
