South Carolina head coach Steve Spurrier had remained quiet since 2015 four-star signee Shameik Blackshear was arrested for petit larceny earlier this month for allegedly stealing a purse and safe valued at close to $1,400 from a Mill Creek, S.C., home.

Friday Spurrier broke that silence, although he had little to say.

“We’ll let the legal system play out,” Spurrier told The State newspaper in Columbia, S.C. “He’s claiming his innocence, so we’ll see what happens.”

According to The State’s report, Blackshear denied entering the home to police, however three witnesses claim to have seen Blackshear exiting the home with stolen items.

He’s scheduled to appear in Bluffton (S.C.) Municipal Court for the first time on Tuesday morning.

Blackshear was one of five four-star defensive standouts signed to the Gamecocks’ 2015 recruiting class. The star defensive end could have a chance to make an immediate impact for a team that finished dead last in the SEC in sacks and tackles for loss in 2014, should his ongoing legal situation resolve itself.
