Former starting cornerback Rico McWilliams has left the South Carolina football program, according to The Big Spur. The senior was reportedly taking reps with the second team defense this fall after being listed as a starter on the Gamecocks’ preseason depth chart.

Head coach Will Muschamp announced McWilliams’ decision on Monday, telling reporters the cornerback was done playing football.

McWilliams appeared in 33 games during his first three seasons at South Carolina and made 18 starts. Only injured linebacker Skai Moore started in more games among the Gamecocks’ current roster.

Last season, McWilliams made 10 starts and appeared in all 12 games. He recorded 32 tackles, two pass breakups and one fumble recovery in 2015.

The Hampton, Ga. native missed several days of practice last week in order to spend time with his family members in Baton Rouge, La. affected by flooding. He returned to the team on Friday, but decided to leave permanently the following day.

South Carolina already lacked depth at cornerback prior to McWilliams’ decision. Chris Lammons and Rashad Fenton are expected to start while junior Jamarcus King is listed as the third cornerback on the depth chart.

Head coach Will Muschamp also announced that wide receiver Christian Owens will transfer.

Owens was a three-star prospect for the 2015 national recruiting class who redshirted as a true freshman after enrolling early.
