What is targeting?

Many around the country, even coaches, are asking that very question.

An interesting call happened Saturday night in the Tennessee-South Carolina game, where Gamecocks defensive back D.J. Smith was ejected for targeting. The call was reviewed and ultimately upheld.

Here’s the play:

“The defender didn’t launch into a defenseless player. It was a bang-bang play,” ESPN broadcaster Rod Gilmore argued. Gilmore didn’t like the call during the broadcast.

From the replay, it’s pretty clear Smith did lead with his helmet, but there was no ill will towards Tennessee WR Jauan Jennings. The call could have gone either way.

It’s a tough call that is very blurry lines at times.

Do you think the officials made the right call?
