Some people enjoy a cooler-than-normal end of summer. Don’t put Will Muschamp in that group.

Perhaps worried that his players won’t get the proper acclimation to the heat once games begin, the South Carolina coach lamented Saturday that the weather hasn’t helped get players in shape. The Gamecocks ran 170 snaps on Saturday, but it was cooler than what Muschamp would prefer.

“I don’t know what kind of weather dance we’ve been doing, but we didn’t get the heat we need. I can assure you of that,” Muschamp said. “That is a huge concern of mine. We’re going to go Monday and Tuesday afternoon and hopefully we’ll get some heat.”

South Carolina made sure newly named backup QB Michael Scarnecchia got significant snaps in this scrimmage with the first-team offense. Overall, the coach was pleased with that unit.

“This was a really good move-the-ball day,” he said. “We got down in the red zone in two different periods. The offense was really successful in the first one and the defense on the next one, so there was some really good give and take in the scrimmage. But I thought we moved the ball well, offensively, especially with our first group. I’m really pleased with that production and where we are there.”

Muschamp said the defense has been inconsistent, and he feels anxious at safety and backup linebacker.

“It has nothing to do with ability, more effort,” Muschamp said. “The tempo has really frustrated us. We’ll continue to work.”

The Gamecocks, who begin classes on Thursday, will start preparation for Coastal Carolina on Thursday.
