As I was sitting in the woods surrounding Arkansas’ Bull Shoals Lake this past weekend, waiting on an unsuspecting deer to walk by, I thought about the past Arkansas vs. Tennessee match-ups since the Hogs joined the SEC in 1992.
Arkansas does not have a very good record all-time against the Volunteers. As a matter of fact, the Hogs have only beaten the Vols four times in sixteen meetings. Arkansas and Tennessee played each other every year from 1992 through 2002, until the SEC changed up its’ cross-division scheduling.

The Hogs won only twice in that span (1992, 1999), while suffering some tough losses at the hands of the Vols. The two teams met again in 2006 and 2007, splitting those games.

The schools also met in two bowl games when the UA was still in the old Southwest Conference. Tennessee won both the 1971 Liberty Bowl, thanks in no small part to referee Preston Watts unbelievably horrible calls, as well as the 1990 Cotton Bowl.

But this past Saturday night in Fayetteville, there was no doubt which team is on the rise and which team has become stagnant. The Hogs buried the Vols 49-7, under a barrage of precision passes, tough running, hard-nosed defense, and a marvelous punt return by Joe Adams that very well could win an ESPY.

On a night when Jarius Wright broke the Arkansas career receptions record, and Joe Adams took center stage on a national scale for his dynamic special teams play, Head Coach Bobby Petrino’s first signing class played their final game at Razorback Stadium. Seventeen seniors were honored on this Senior Night, and they didn’t disappoint.

Adams scored on special teams and with a reception. Wright scored a touchdown to go along with his 5 catches for 94 yards. Running Back Broderick Green scored, RB De’Anthony Curtis scored, safety Tramain Thomas nabbed an interception, and DE Jake Bequette had a sack. These players will be missed in 2012, but they have helped lay the foundation for future success at the University of Arkansas.

The Hogs moved to 9-1 on the season, and jumped to #6 in each poll.

Arkansas now turns their attention to the Mississippi State Bulldogs, and their home finale in Little Rock this weekend. MSU comes into this game at 5-5 after dropping some winnable games against South Carolina and Auburn.

The Dogs defense is pretty good, but it’s not as stout as last years group. MSU is ranked in the middle of the pack in almost every defensive statistical category in the SEC. Miss St does have two of the best secondary players in the conference when it comes to interceptions. Johnthan Banks (5) and Nickoe Whitley (4) are ranked as some of the SEC’s best ball-hawks, but Whitley may not play this Saturday due to injury.

Offensively, the Dogs are mixed nicely with over 167 yards rushing and 203 passing. Running back Vick Ballard is their bell-cow, with 811 yards and 7 TD. QB’s Chris Relf and Tyler Russell are both sure to play, and receiver Chad Bumphis is their big play threat.

Arkansas has better overall talent and depth than MSU, and with the way they have been playing for the last few weeks, there aren’t too many teams in the country that could beat the Hogs right now. Plus, they have a huge home field advantage in War Memorial Stadium, which is their home away from home. MSU has beaten the Hogs only twice in the last fourteen years, and have not won in the state of Arkansas since 1993.

While the Bulldogs still need one more victory to become bowl eligible, and would love nothing better than to derail Arkansas’ shot at another BCS Bowl game, MSU’s best shot at their sixth win will be Thanksgiving weekend versus a beleaguered Ole Miss squad.

The Hogs simply have too much to play for.

Oh, and by the way, I missed that unsuspecting deer that came running by. I gotta get that scope sighted in better.

According to head coach Bobby Petrino, the Arkansas Razorbacks have the fastest football team on the planet. Speaking to a Razorback booster club in Mountain Home, Arkansas, Petrino said of his team, “we’re real fast.” No kidding, that’s a direct quote.

In his mind were the recent numbers a few members of his team clocked in their 40-yard dash. Here’s a quick look at the 10 fastest guys.

Jarius Wright

4.27

Ronnie Wingo Jr.

4.27

Knile Davis

4.29

Joe Adams

4.3

Darius Winston

4.32

De’Anthony Curtis

4.36

Isaac Madison

4.36

Javontee Herndon

4.37

Maudrecus Humphrey

4.37

Greg Gatson

4.4

To put it in perspective, the fastest time at the recent NFL combine was from former Miami player Demarcus Van Dyke – a 4.28. Next in line was Patrick Peterson with his 4.34. Over all, only 11 guys in the entire combine finished with a 4.4 time or better. And we are supposed to believe that Arkansas has that many on one team?

Come on. Did Les Miles stop by to help Petrino manage the clock?

Knile Davis has matured into a very strong running back for the Arkansas Razorbacks. Writer Brad Audrain predicts a big game in the Sugar Bowl as he takes on the overrated Ohio State defense. He also gives a brief history of Knile's career in Fayetteville.

Since Knile Davis arrived on campus at the University of Arkansas, life has been frustrating for the 4-star back from Texas. Soon after committing to be a Razorback, his entrance was trumped by the transfer of Broderick Green from USC and the signing of a more highly touted running back in Ronnie Wingo Jr. Davis graduated early and moved to Fayetteville in January to be ready for Spring Practice. Unfortunately, after a week of practice, Davis broke his collar bone and had to sit out until the fall.

Davis never waivered in his decision to be a Hog, but with Michael Smith, Wingo, Green, De’Anthony Curtis, and Dennis Johnson all sharing time in the backfield with him, Davis knew it would be very difficult to see much playing time in his freshmen campaign. Davis played through some more injuries his freshmen year and always ran hard when his number was called, but he received only 33 carries and averaged right around 5 yards a pop.

Once Michael Smith had graduated from school, the backfield opened up a little more. Dennis Johnson was lost for the season only a few games in, and Knile Davis was finally able to get his much needed carries. For some reason, Bobby Petrino stuck with Broderick “chubby” Green for the first half of the season, and it ultimately cost the Razorbacks at least one win (possibly two because Green had a miserable game against Auburn that included a game altering fumble that lead to an Auburn TD return). Davis did not complain even though anyone that watched Green take 8 seconds to hit the hole, knew he wasn’t worth the “charmin that he wipes his butt with.”

Knile finally had a big run against Texas A&M, and he never slowed down. After compiling 82 yards on 10 carries against the Aggies, Petrino continued adding to his work-load with fourteen carries for 91yeards at Auburn and twenty-two carries for 176 against that sweaty son of a bitch Houston Nutt. Knile finished the season with 4 straight games gaining over 100 yards against some of the nations top teams (3 of these 4 teams are currently ranked in the BCS Top 25, and they were all ranked in the Top 18 when the game was played).

The Buckeyes and E. Gordon Gee believe that they have faced a real schedule this season, and that their defensive statistics aren’t a complete joke to this point. Ohio St. continues to brag about their defense against the pass and how it’s so highly ranked. Well, Ryan Mallett and crew are up for the challenge, but the two-headed monster directed by Bobby Petrino is more than Ryan Mallett, Joe Adams, Greg Childs, Cobi Hamilton, and DJ Williams. Ask LSU, and their number one ranked run defense which saw Arkansas two days after Thanksgiving. Knile Davis compiled 152 yards on 30 carries only week after thrashing Mississippi St. for 187 on the same number of touches.

Arkansas finally has its running back, and that is not good news for the Buckeyes and their overrated defense. Arkansas does not intend to drop the ball on the SEC’s undefeated record against Ohio St. in bowl games, and Knile Davis is the reason the Hogs are confident. The Sugar Bowl will be rocking on January 4th, and the River Knile will be running all over those Buckeyes. I just wish E. Gordon Gee were on the field to take a stiff arm from the River Knile on his way to the end zone.
