Kevin Sumlin's offense will be fun to watch in the SEC, but who are the Aggies going to get to run the offense?

I’ll be honest, being an avid viewer of football in the Southeastern Conference, I had not heard of first-year Texas A&M coach Kevin Sumlin before last season’s near-BCS buster run he enjoyed at Houston. A coaching journeyman with stops at seven different programs since 1988, Sumlin was simply Case Keenum’s boss in my mind, the play-caller for a quarterback I respected due to his weekly gaudy statistics.

I’d occasionally check Houston’s box score Saturday afternoons to try and comprehend Keenum’s number of completions, attempts and sheer total yardage. When Sumlin signed on with the Aggies in December, I knew the SEC was getting a future success story, a leader who brings a new appetite for offense into what’s been a defense-dominated league much of the last few seasons.

He wears a visor like Steve Spurrier, but he’s nearly 20 years younger with an offense that looks like the Gator Fun-N-Gun on steroids.

Will Sumlin’s interpretation of the Air Raid fly against some of the nation’s biggest and fastest defenders? Predicated on speed and a quick release, pass protection isn’t of utmost importance in Sumlin’s schemes since Aggie quarterbacks will have the ball out before being hit by a blitz. That’s one reason the Aggies will be entertaining this season when they have the football.

An interesting nugget surrounding A&M’s new offense is the addition of former Texas Tech gunslinger Kliff Kingsbury as the team’s offensive coordinator. Like Keenum, Kingsbury put up stupid numbers through the air during his career in Lubbock, utilizing four and five-wide sets to spread out a defense. He was an understudy of current West Virginia offensive mastermind Dana Holgorsen, another one of Sumlin’s comrades, and took personal instruction from the godfather of the spread, Mike Leach, while playing for the Red Raiders.

Last season at Houston, Sumlin and Kingsbury directed the nation’s top-ranked offense and hope to bring some of that same swagger into College Station. The Aggies have spent all spring and fall practice adjusting to the up-tempo pace expected from everyone in the hurry-up, spread-based attack.

But there’s still no No. 1 quarterback.

With a Thursday night opener at Louisiana Tech looming in three short weeks, the coaching staff has yet to name a starter expected to get the ball in space to talented receivers Ryan Swope and Uzoma Nwachukwu. Right now, there are four underclassmen, interchangeable in fact, competing for the full-time gig. They are: sophomores Jameill Showers and Matt Joeckel along with freshmen Matt Davis and Johnny Manziel.

Showers is the front-runner with the quickest release on the team. I can assure you the Aggies won’t average 599 yards per game — what the Houston Cougars ran off last season — but they’ll certainly test LSU and Alabama’s secondaries through the air.

TAMU has a chance to open a few eyes across the nation with wins against its first two SEC opponents, Florida and Arkansas. Good news for the Aggies? Both of those contests come at home.

How do you think A&M’s pass-happy offense will fare during its first SEC season?

If you follow college football, you probably know ESPN’s Bruce Feldman. The guy is a stud when it comes to college football, and has an outstanding reputation amongst fans and his fellow journalists.

Reportedly, ESPN has suspended Feldman due to his participation in former Texas Tech coach Mike Leach’s autobiography. The screwy part is that apparently Feldman received permission from ESPN to be a part of the project!

Big writers like Sports Illustrated’s Stewart Mandel are leading the charge on defending Bruce Feldman:

This is a pretty interesting situation, and will likely demonstrate the power of the “internet mob.” As for Feldman himself, I don’t think he has anything to worry about. If his career with ESPN ends, it sounds like any number of major companies would snatch him up in a second. You could argue that this will actually be good for his career as the buzz about Bruce Feldman increases.

You can see more information here on the amazing power of social media and response to the Bruce Feldman suspension.

The Washington Post is reporting that Mike Leach is interviewing with Maryland on Thursday. Maryland’s decision on Leach is extremely important to Auburn fans, because that decision could decide whether or not Gus Malzahn is at Auburn next year.

According to a source close to the situation, Leach is the frontrunner, but if Maryland feels that he brings to much baggage from the past incidents (Craig James’ Son), Malzahn is next in line for the job. Malzahn has already interviewed, and Maryland was very impressed to say the least.

The Dan Mullen to Miami talks are heating up. With Jon Gruden all but telling Miami to pound sand, the Hurricanes will have to move on to their next candidate in the list of coaches. I’m not for certain, but Dan Mullen has to be second on the list and is followed by Randy Edsall from Connecticut, Tommy Tuberville and others. Mike Leach isn’t really even in consideration.

Let me just say this, if you’re Dan Mullen and you want to win championships, take the Miami job. He’s won eight games in Starkville this year and has done a fabulous job there for two years. I hope I don’t offend any State fans, but in a league where there is Alabama, LSU and now Auburn and Arkansas getting right, not to mention when Florida, Georgia and Tennessee are right, the Bulldogs’ chances of winning a championship are very, very stacked against them. However, I have heard Dan Mullen, and his family also, is very happy and satisfied in Starkville, but if he wants to win championships he has to take the Miami job. Mullen has entergized the State fan base this season to maybe an all-time high. He is a fabulous coach.

I hope the SEC doesn’t lose him as a coach, but let’s face it, all of us knew he would not stay at Mississippi State a long time. He has had success this year and will be a very successful coach moving forward whether he stays at State or takes another job.

Mark Richt graduated from the University of Miami in 1982. He played there with former UGA Defensive Coordinator Willie Martinez. He also graduated from nearby Boca Raton, Fl high school. After the Hurricanes fired Head Coach Randy Shannon, Richt’s name came up first in the possible replacement conversation.

The UGA head coach is the current Dean of SEC Coaches having completed his 10th year at the helm. Considering Georgia has had only three Head coaches since 1988, it seems likely Richt will remain in Athens.

“Georgia is my home” he said when asked about possible other head coaching options. His brother-in-law former NFL QB Brad Johnson owns a house in the Athens area as well.

Others mentioned in the search were Texas Tech’s Tommy Tubberville, former Texas Tech head coach Mike Leach and Oklahoma Defensive Coordinator Brent Venables.

He is scheduled to receive $2.8 million next year.
