The last moment that I felt really good about sports in general was on the night of November 5th, 2011. While some fans (I can barely even call them fans) were upset about the Alabama-LSU game resulting in a 9-6 score, I was thrilled. The game was incredible. The game clearly represented the greatest collection of talent in the game between the two rosters. The hitting on nearly every play was incredible; so much so that my bones ached after watching the game from the comfort of my couch.

Why didn’t Meyer just admit admit the talent was lacking and he wanted another job? Why pull the wool over the eyes of one of the country’s best fanbases to become a college football know-it-all before joining the Big Ten? He bailed on players and commits to head home with an impressive resume and some studio analyst skills to boot.

Meyer may best be described as a coaching thrill seeker. He takes jobs where he’s confidant of winning right away, proceeds to do so, then quickly exits for his next job. He values the thrill of quick success over the long-term satisfaction of building an elite program.

Ten years ago this night would have been inconceivable. Nobody, especially rabid SEC football fans of the early 2000s, could imagine a day when their conference’s championship would be decided on foreign soil (Texas of all places!) between two schools that weren’t even SEC members.
