The streak of Texas A&M offensive tackles drafted in the NFL was extended when Germain Ifedi was selected by the Seattle Seahawks with the final pick of the first round of the 2016 draft. The 6-foot-6, 324-pounder became the latest Aggies offensive lineman taken, making it four consecutive years in which Texas A&M has sent an offensive lineman to the NFL.

The offensive line has been a strength under Aggies head coach Kevin Sumlin, but this season – Sumlin’s fifth – looks to be different. It’s the least experienced line since Sumlin arrived.

That’s not to say the line is void of talent. But when you are implementing a new offensive scheme while simultaneously breaking in a new quarterback, a veteran offensive line would certainly be an asset. But that’s just not in the cards for the 2016 season.

Tackle Avery Gennesy is the only returning player along the offensive line who started every game in 2015. The senior tackle will be the leader among projected starters Koda Martin, a sophomore tackle, along with guards Jermaine Eluemunor (senior) and Keaton Sutherland (sophomore), and redshirt freshman center Erik McCoy.

Sumlin brought back offensive line coach Jim Turner for a second stint with the Aggies. But the veteran coach, who in his first go-round at Texas A&M from 2008-11 produced first-round NFL linemen Jake Matthews, Luke Joeckel and Cedric Ogbuehi, is making more headlines off the field than on it.

You’ll remember Turner, as the Miami Dolphins offensive line coach (2012-13), was fired in February 2014 following locker room controversies that included the Jonathan Martin hazing scandal.

Turner was one of two Texas A&M assistants who on Monday were suspended without pay for two weeks for an inappropriate slideshow at a fundraiser that included degrading comments towards women.

The Aggies open fall camp on Monday, so while the inexperienced offensive line begins working towards the 2016 opener, its position coach won’t be there.

Turner is the Aggies’ third offensive line coach in three years. It’s a line that has compiled a total of 19 starts between them from last season. Of those, 13 belong to Gennesy. Sutherland started five games last season and has seven starts dating back to 2014. Eluemunor is the only other player with a start, and he has just one.

McCoy made big strides over the spring. The 310-pounder adapted very well to new OC Noel Mazzone’s up-tempo offense, according to Sumlin.

Martin is a 6-foot-6, 300-pound project who saw limited action last season but is expected to be a force on the offensive line in 2016. Height, reach and foot speed are the things that the coaching staff is excited about. Now it’s a matter of getting him enough reps to bring him up to speed with the college level.

It’s a group that will go a long way in determining whether or not Mazzone’s new offense takes off and Oklahoma graduate transfer QB Trevor Knight is a hit or a bust in College Station.
