Seattle Seahawks DE Michael Bennett has had to watch this offseason as the New York Giants gave DE Olivier Vernon a $17 million-a-year contract and the Denver Broncos gave DE Von Miller a contract that will pay him north of $19 million per year.

Meanwhile, Bennett will make only $5.5 million this season and $7 million next year.

The former Texas A&M star said he’s tired of earning less than what he’s worth:

“I just want to be fairly compensated with the top guys in the league,” Bennett tells The Huffington Post. “I’m definitely one of the top five defensive ends.”

To put Bennett’s dominance in perspective, he’s recorded the second-most total quarterback pressures in the NFL the last four years, trailing only Houston’s J.J. Watt.

Despite the impact he has on the game, Bennett’s salary makes him only the 27th-highest paid defensive lineman in the NFL.

“Mike is probably one of the most versatile athletes in the National Football League,” said Michael Robinson, a former teammate of Bennett’s in Seattle and a current analyst for the NFL Network. “That’s what makes his contract situation pretty peculiar. He really may be the most underpaid defensive linemen in NFL history.”

To be fair, Bennett said he doesn’t get angry when other guys (like Miller, another  former Aggie) get big contracts — he just wants one for himself.

“[Y]ou definitely want to get what you think you’re worth. When you put all the things together, I just don’t see a lot of guys having the type of impact I have.”

Bennett recently hired Marshawn Lynch’s agent, so it’ll be interesting to see how training camp plays out for the talented defensive end.
