South Carolina coach Will Muschamp has experience coaching against Texas A&M prior to Saturday’s game at Williams-Brice Stadium. Muschamp spent three seasons as Texas’ defensive coordinator (2008-10) when the Aggies were still a member of the Big 12 conference and played an annual matchup against their in-state foe.

Muschamp commented on the now defunct rivalry, which he believes should be renewed regardless of the teams’ conference affiliation.

Texas and Texas A&M played each other every year between 1915 and 2011, which was the third longest series in college football. The Longhorns hold the advantage with a 76-37-5 record in 118 total meetings.

But the teams haven’t played since the Aggies’ final Big 12 season in 2011, which is a disappointment to many fans. Consider this, Texas’ fight song, “Texas Fight,” includes the lyrics “and it’s goodbye to A&M,” while the whole second verse of the Aggie War Hymn is about Texas.

Perhaps the NCAA will agree with Muschamp’s comments and influence them to renew one of college football’s longest rivalries in the near future.
