He wowed coaches and other observers during spring drills, and subsequently landed atop the Texas A&M depth chart at wide receiver and kick returner.

Expectations are sky high for freshman Christian Kirk. But just what can we expect from the first-year player?

Aggies coach Kevin Sumlin isn’t afraid to let talented freshmen take on big roles. Johnny Manziel won the Heisman Trophy as a freshman and wide receiver Mike Evans was a key target in his first year. Last season, Myles Garrett immediately became a defensive leader with 11.5 sacks.

So there’s little doubt Kirk will get opportunities. But he’s also part of a solid group of young receivers that could allow the Aggies to spread the wealth. Junior Josh Reynolds had 52 catches for 842 yards in 2015, while Speedy Noil and Ricky Seals-Jones combined for more than 1,000 receiving yards last year as freshmen.

A five-star member of the 2015 recruiting class, Kirk ranked as the nation’s fourth-best receiver, according to the 247Sports composite rankings. Only Alabama’s Calvin Ridley rated higher among SEC signees. Kirk also earned the distinction as Texas A&M’s most touted offensive signee, ahead of Texas prep legend Kyler Murray at quarterback.

But at 5-foot-11 and 190 pounds, Kirk isn’t the physical specimen the 6-foot-5, 225-pound Evans was as a freshman. Thus it may be tough to expect Kirk to match Evans. The current Tampa Bay Buccaneers receiver had 82 catches for 1,105 yards and five touchdowns in 2012.

Those numbers are ridiculous, but there’s a good chance Kirk can benefit from having more experienced receivers attracting attention from defenses. There’s no reason to think the Arizona native couldn’t be among the nation’s freshmen receiving leaders.
