Butch Jones has won over many within the Tennessee football program. Add one more Vol great to the list.

All-Pro tight end Jason Witten told the Chattanooga Times Free Press that he was impressed with his alma mater’s fight in a losing effort Saturday against Oklahoma. Although, Witten admits he was forced to tune out early in the third quarter as the Dallas Cowboys had an early game against the Tennessee Titans the following day, he was pleasantly surprised with Tennessee’s effort against a highly favored opponent.

“But I saw some of it,” he said after the Cowboys’ 26-10 win over Titans on in Nashville. “I thought we looked pretty good overall. A lot more fight than the last couple of years, a lot more speed, too, especially on defense.”

“Butch [Jones] has definitely got them going in the right direction. The way he’s recruiting, it will only get better from here.”

Witten visited Tennessee’s camp this past summer and even worked with eventual-starting tight end Ethan Wolf. Wolf, who became the first Tennessee true freshman to start a season opener at tight end, called the experience a “dream” after meeting the player for who he modeled his game.

“I grew up watching Jason play, and he came over here and worked out with us,” Wolf told Wes Rucker of GoVols247. “He inspired me as a tight end, so I figured I’d honor him by wearing his jersey number that he wears in the NFL. Unfortunately I couldn’t get No. 1 because Jalen’s got it, but I’m proud to wear No. 82.”
