Tennessee’s heated quarterback battle between Justin Worley, Josh Dobbs and Nathan Peterman may come to a close today or tomorrow.

A frustrated Butch Jones confirmed yesterday that he’ll name a starting quarterback in the ‘next day or two’.

“I’m hoping maybe in the next day or two we’ll make that decision,” Jones said after Wednesday’s scrimmage. “I think it’s important for our football team in moving forward that they know who the starting quarterback is. I’ve been pleased with all three individuals lately. They’ve done a very, very good job of handling the volume of the offense that we have in, but more particularly taking care of the football and making great decisions with the football, having command of the line of scrimmage.

“We’ll go back tonight, and … we’ve charted every single throw every quarterback has made in practice. We’re getting very close. Very soon we’ll name a starter.”

Deep down in Butch Jones’ heart of hearts, his biggest regret during the 2013 season was starting Peterman over Worley at Florida. That game was very winnable, and he didn’t have to make a quarterback change. We know now starting Peterman was a mistake — it was his first career start, ever, and in The Swamp. Knowing that, it’s hard to think anyone other than Worley will get the week one nod.

Josh Dobbs is a fine looking player, and he’ll play regardless of whether he’s named the starter or not.
