Tennessee’s draft slump is over.

The Philadelphia Eagles selected former Vols defensive end Derek Barnett with the No. 14 overall pick in the first round of the NFL Draft on Thursday. Barnett is the first Volunteer player taken since the 2014 draft.

Barnett has been a fixture on Tennessee’s defensive line for the past three years. While some argue his length isn’t ideal, the numbers show he can overcome any perceived shortcomings in his length or his game.

His biggest accomplishment while in Knoxville was breaking legendary Reggie White’s career sack record. Barnett racked up 33 in three years, compared to White’s 32. Barnett’s quickness is off-the-charts, and he violently uses his hands to get to the quarterback.

And the 6-foot-3, 259 pound end just doesn’t hit opponents, he crushes them.

Being in a conference with so many talented defensive linemen, Barnett was somewhat overshadowed during his three-year career despite putting up jaw-dropping numbers. Regardless, his career numbers prove he’s one of the most productive linemen to enter the draft from the SEC in a long time. It will certainly be interesting to see how Barnett’s career vs. a player like Myles Garrett’s turns out.

The Nashville, Tennessee, native was a former 4-star recruit, rated as the nation’s No. 13 defensive end and No. 5 overall player in the state of Tennessee for the class of 2014.
