Derek Barnett will make history Sunday. The former Brentwood Academy standout will become the first true freshman to start at defensive end in school history when the Vols host Utah State at Neyland Stadium. Barnett has dominated Tennessee’s offseason camps, impressing coaches and gaining plenty of media attention.

The hype continued after Tennessee released its week one depth chart with Barnett listed as a No. 1 defensive end in the 4-3 scheme. The freshman joins a defensive line with zero prior starting experience and may be the most talented of the group. The four-star prospect rated as the No. 11 strong-side defensive end, according to the 247 Sports composite rankings. Thus far, Barnett has been the most impressive freshman pass rusher, surpassing Dewayne Hendrix, the higher ranked prospect of the two.

Barnett will play a major role in Tennessee’s defense this season. With his competition also lacking experience, the freshman will likely hold control of the position if his progress continues. Barnett will benefit from playing in front of a talented linebacking corps of A.J. Johnson, Curt Maggitt and Jalen Reeves-Maybin, who could take pressure off the inexperienced line.

As he kicks off his career at Tennessee, Barnett will have his hands full facing an experienced Utah State offensive line. Senior Kevin Whimpey and redshirt sophomore Jake Simonich started in all 14 games for the Aggies last season and are solid blockers. Barnett will have his hands full week one, but should gain experience from this matchup moving forward. There is plenty of time for the young lineman to grow, but all eyes will be on Barnett to provide the answer for questions facing Tennessee’s defensive line.
