Reaction to the firing of Butch Jones has not left the former Tennessee coach in a positive light for many connected to the football program.

Former players like Marlin Lane have sounded off on how Jones treated players, but now running back John Kelly has weighed in with a one-word answer about what he’s looking for in the new coach that is a direct indictment of Jones. “Honesty,” Kelly said, according to Jesse Simonton of Volquest.

While there were several reasons why it didn’t fit for Jones and Tennessee, the fact that there were several dozen transfers during his tenure speaks to a situation where at the minimum, players and Jones somehow had a misunderstanding after their recruitment.

This Kelly reaction is the latest incident that will draw the ire of Tennessee fans, who were already irritated by Jones reportedly calling at least one recruit to talk about his departure and his future, possibly with the player again.

Former Tennessee commit Tanner Ingle relayed part of a conversation he had with Jones to the Orlando Sentinel, who said the now former Tennessee coach called Ingle personally and added that Jones told him “to find a place to go, quickly … and that if he gets anything he will contact me.”
