The Philadelphia Eagles selected former Tennessee DE Derek Barnett in the first round of the 2017 NFL Draft and while he didn’t play a huge role for the team, he did make an impact and now has a Super Bowl ring.

This fall, though, he’ll have a bigger role on the Eagles defense, and it’ll be important for him to make the most of his increased workload.

This week, NFL.com analyst Lance Zierlein named five 2017 draft picks he thinks can have breakout seasons this fall, and Barnett made the cut. Here’s why Zierlein thinks Barnett can be even better in 2018:

Barnett played in just 41.6 percent of the defensive snaps, but with the Eagles releasing Vinny Curry this offseason, he should see a lot more playing time in 2018, even though Philadelphia still has good depth at the position. Barnett is more of a technician than speed rusher off the edge, so he ran into much more traffic than he was used to as he transitioned to battling NFL offensive tackles. Barnett has quick, strong hands and finds efficient paths to the quarterback. His season as an understudy likely gave him the experience he needed to help convert a higher percentage of his rushes into hurries and sacks.

Barnett recorded 18 tackles and five sacks as a rookie, and also scored a touchdown on a fumble recovery. In the Super Bowl, he had a key fumble recovery as well.

The Eagles have a rising star in Barnett, and he’ll be counted on a lot more in 2018 and beyond.
