Judging by a vast number of preseason picks heading into the summer, Tennessee will be the clear favorite to win the East this season and have many fans on Rocky Top thinking a win in Atlanta could be forthcoming. While the Vols have won six games in a row — the second highest mark among Power 5 schools — and destroyed a ranked Northwestern team in the bowl game, not every one is convinced.

Bill Connelly’s S&P+ Ratings appear to be in that camp, as a recent SBNation article suggests Tennessee is currently the second most overrated team in the nation – judging by opening Vegas over/under numbers. Going by this metric, Florida State is currently the most overrated team in the nation.

The S&P+ Ratings are determined by examining efficiency, explosiveness, field position, ability to finish drives and turnovers versus the every opponents on the schedule.

So how exactly is Tennessee overrated?

The Vols currently have an over/under of 10 wins, while the S&P+ Ratings predict the team to win 8.59 games. The -1.41 difference in the metrics are second only to FSU’s -1.52.

Considering Tennessee only has three true road games in 2016 and are favored in every game according to ESPN’s FPI rankings, it’s hard to imagine the Vols losing to four regular season opponents this year. However if you planned on placing your money on Tennessee winning 11 or more games, the S&P+ Ratings may give you some second thoughts.
