After failing to win a single SEC matchup last season, Tennessee has some rebuilding to do in 2018.

So what should be first-year coach Jeremy Pruitt’s goal for this Tennessee team this season and how attainable is it?

Phil Steele, the author of Phil Steele’s College Football Preview, sat down with Blake Toppmeyer of the Knoxville News Sentinel to discuss Tennessee’s outlook for 2018.

“It’s different than most years,” said Steele. “I think most years Volunteer fans come into the season thinking SEC East title, potential SEC contender, definitely after last year, I think getting to a bowl game would be a good thing for Tennessee this year, especially given that a new head coach is coming in and they have a fairly difficult schedule.

“Opening up with West Virginia, playing Florida, playing Georgia on the road, Auburn on the road, South Carolina on the road. I think it could be a rough start for Tennessee this year, maybe 2-and-6 or 3-and-5, but I think the season will finish out a lot stronger provided that Pruitt can keep the team together. Once you get to November, getting teams like Charlotte, Kentucky, Missouri at home and a road trip to Vanderbilt, all those are winnable so I think Tennessee does have shot at getting to a bowl game but for Volunteer fans, I think this is the lowest expectations they have had coming into a season in quite some time.”
