The Tennessee Volunteers men’s basketball team has gotten quite familiar with the Gonzaga Bulldogs over the past few years, but not in a good way.

Since 2007, the Vols are only 1-4 against coach Mark Few’s squad, but they turned a corner under coach Rick Barnes last season — coincidentally during a year when the Vols and Bulldogs didn’t play.

This fall, though, the rivalry will resume. On Monday, the Vols officially announced that they’d play Gonzaga at the Jerry Colangelo Classic in Phoenix on Sunday, Dec. 9.

In the release from the school, Barnes said he’s looking forward to the challenge:

“We look to play a challenging, national schedule every year,” Barnes said. “Adding a game like this against an elite, well-coached program like Gonzaga is going to serve as a great early-season test for us. I appreciate the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame for giving our program the opportunity to be a part of this inaugural event that salutes one of the most respected figures in the game in Jerry Colangelo.”

If the Vols can win that game, it’ll be a big feather for their cap when the 2019 NCAA Tournament rolls around.

Either way, the game in Phoenix should be fun to watch, and it will be a great trip for Barnes and his squad.
